SALE ONE WEEK ONLY Mel Meyer's work runs the gamut of multiple mediums. His artwork, especially his metal sculptures, are known for their geometric components and bright contrasting colors. Other mediums he has worked in include watercolors, stained glass, frescoes, paper, textiles and acrylics. Religion, education, and an appreciation for life suffuse his work. It is estimated that he created 10,000 art pieces during artistic career. His work has an atmosphere of "joie de vie" that fits his artistic philosophy: “Art is an outgrowth of what the person is," said Meyer. "I’m a happy person. The feeling of being happy finds its way into the art." Brother Mel Meyer was born in 1928. He was taught by members of the Marianist order at McBride High School, an experience that would lead him to take vows with that same order later in 1952. He graduated from University of Dayton, became a high school teacher, and received his MFA at Notre Dame in 1960. He studied under Jean Charlot, a Mexican muralist who worked alongside Diego Rivera, and Ivan Mestrovic, the legendary Croatian sculptor. He received an honorary PhD from St. Louis University. He passed away in 2013. Left piece dimensions are 79" h x 51" w x 1.5" d. Right piece 65.25" h x 49.5" w x 1.5" d.

  • Nicholas Bodde Triptych Color Field on Aluminum

    SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Untitled" by Nicholas Bodde depicts vibrant layers of color on narrow aluminum strips. These pieces are interchangeable and can be hung in various ways. Each is signed on the verso and was created in 2013. All three are sold as a set. Each aluminum panel measures 39 " h x 2.5" w. Bodde was born in New York he lives and works in Germany. He considers himself a German painter, who uses lacquered aluminum to create works that are beautiful in their simplicity and in their joyful exploration of color. The artist drives upon the tradition of European constructivism as well as Colour Field Painting, noting influences by Mark Rothko and Barnett Newmann. Bodde claims that his paintings “reveal themselves differently from close up and from a distance. When viewed from a distance they clearly appear related to constructivist geometric tendencies. But from close proximity, one notices that my main objective is painting and not construction.” The artist has reduced his subject to parallel vertical or horizontal lines and fields that race across the hard surface in a controlled riot – as if the viewer were looking out of a fast moving car while driving by fields of colorful flowers. Bodde constantly questions the colors, focusing on creating a construction through using different colors. He sees his creations as a mode of communication with the world. He paints on aluminum plates by successive coats of painting that he applies with different utensils to finally obtain a result that imprints itself into the eye’s retina. The game of colorful stripes, more or less large, sometimes with the feeling of the brush, sometimes flat, reflects the light differently on each lap. The brightness of his palette, a willful choice, accentuates the vitality that emanates from this painting.     SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Untitled #34” was created by Sam Gilliam, one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. It is dated and signed on the lower front. The thick handmade paper is rich with folds and texture and the colors lively. In addition to Acrylic paint on the surface there appears to be imbedded color in the handmade paper which has additional embossed accents. Unframed the piece measures 16 x 14. Provenance of Yaw Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan is on the verso along with the note that the Paper Surfaces in contact with this artwork are acid free. In the mid-1960s he emerged from the Washington D.C. scene with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. One profound manner was the sculpture aspect of the painting giving it a free flowing expression of pure color. In the latter half of the 1950s, Washington D.C. saw a flourishing of abstract art that emphasized the form-making capabilities of pure color. Known as The Washington Color School, the loosely affiliated group of abstract painters knew each other through various teaching experiences. The moniker has an uncertain origin but likely originated with the title of a 1965 exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, "Washington Color Painters," curated by Gerald Nordland. The rich pigments of pastel and oil allows her to create paintings that have the brilliance and the bold color we see in the landscapes of the western United States, giving her unlimited options to create. These mediums allow Griffith to bring depth and texture, light and mood into her paintings. "My goal is to create work that draw the viewer in to experience and imagine the time of day, the temperature, the sounds, the smells. I want the viewer to experience the work and get lost in it – if only for a moment. My love of the landscape prompts me to paint it. I look for a story to tell when I look at the sagebrush hills, the lush river lands, the wheat fields, the intense greens of spring in rich mountain valleys and the ever changing colors of the desert. My mediums allow me to tell that story with strong color and intensity." As a child of artist parents, Griffith grew up on a ranch near the Missouri Breaks in central Montana. They lived in a remote area and that allowed for a lot of self-directed entertainment - drawing, painting, reading, horseback riding and daily ranch chores. Griffith was a self-proclaimed artist at age 5, getting into her mother's paints and paper. Landscape shapes, texture and color were observed and studied. Famous artists like Russell, O’Keefe and Payne were favorite sources of reference. "I don't remember ever being "bored" because there was always something to do that interested me! Pretty much all of that stuck with me through a career in Radiology Sciences; showing work in galleries and exhibits during that time. In the mid 1990's my art became a full time endeavor." Bonnie Zahn Griffith has studied with instructors such as Robert Moore, Lorenzo Chavez, Ned Mueller and others in the quest to strengthen and develop her style of representational work. Griffith is a signature member and the Secretary for the Pastel Society of the West Coast, a signature member of and past President for the Northwest Pastel Society, member of the Landscape Artists International (juried membership), Plein Air Painters of Idaho and American Impressionist Society. She has served 7 years as the chair for the Meridian (ID) Arts Commission, has served as the Executive Director of WaterWorks Art Museum, Miles City, MT and curator for several galleries.
